Natasha: Akpabio breaks silence over sexual harassment allegation

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Speaking during Wednesday’s plenary session following a one-week recess, Akpabio dismissed the claims, emphasizing his long-standing respect for women.
“At no time did I ever harass any woman,” he stated. “I was raised by my late single mother to respect women, and I have always upheld that principle. I was even recognized as the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria.”
Akpabio also acknowledged that he had been receiving calls regarding the allegations since February 25, adding that the matter had been widely discussed on social media.
He urged the public and the media to refrain from drawing conclusions, insisting that the case should be left for the courts to decide.
Shortly after Akpabio’s remarks, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan formally submitted a petition under Senate Order 40, accusing him of sexual harassment and abuse of office.
The petition was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct for further review.
The dispute between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan stems from a February confrontation over seating arrangements, which has since escalated into a broader conflict. The controversy has sparked concerns about decorum within the Senate, with lawmakers divided over the allegations.
As the investigation proceeds, the situation continues to generate intense debate both within the legislative chamber and among the public.
