Two NCoS officials suspended over attempt to process passport for inmate

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has suspended two of its personnel following an attempt to facilitate the processing of an international passport for an inmate.

In a statement issued by Umar Abubakar, the Public Relations Officer of the NCoS, the misconduct was uncovered two weeks ago through automated passport application systems and sweeping reforms implemented within the Nigeria Immigration Service.

Abubakar credited the discovery to effective inter-agency collaboration and information sharing.

He described the actions of the officers as violations of NCoS protocols and stated they were “unacceptable and impermissible.”

“Subsequently, necessary disciplinary actions were taken including the suspension of the two (2) correctional personnel implicated in the incident by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), chaired by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubumni Tunji-Ojo,” the statement read.

“The Controller General of Corrections (CGC), Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche MFR mni, has reiterated his commitment to upholding discipline, transparency, and professionalism in all custodial centres across the country.

“The Service categorically states that any personnel found engaging in acts of misconduct, corruption, or sabotage will be shown the way out of the system.”

Abubakar further assured the public that the Correctional Service remains firmly committed to its core mandate of ensuring the safe custody, humane treatment, and rehabilitation of inmates in accordance with international standards.
